The Inequality-Trust Nexus Revisited: At What Level of Aggregation Does Income Inequality Matter for Social Trust?

Abstract The negative linkage between income inequality and social trust is widely acknowledged. Despite this consensus, it remains unclear at what level of aggregation matters most to the cultivation trust. In a comprehensive review, Wilkinson Pickett (Annu Rev Sociol 35:493–511, 2009) speculate that important when measured societal level, whereas for lower units economic development becomes stronger predictor. Merging regional data 216 regions in 22 European countries (2010–2014) Social Survey, paper first examine claim results demonstrate non-Eastern variation accounted by differences rather than within countries. For development, opposite true. Within-country relate significantly trust, while between-country do not. I conclude more strongly affected stratification society as whole inequalities smaller aggregation.
